PALATAL EXPANDER

The palatal expander "expands" (or widens) your upper jaw by putting gentle pressure on your upper molars each time an adjustment is made. The animation below will instruct you about when and how to adjust your expander. When you achieve the desired expansion, you will wear the appliance for several months to solidify the expansion and to prevent regression.

Step 1
In a well-lit area, tip the patient's head back.
Step 2
Place the key in the hole until it is firmly in place
Step 3
Push the key toward the back of the mouth. You will notice the fender will rotate and the new hole will appear. The rotation stops when the key meets the back of the expander.
Step 4
Press back and down toward the tongue to remove the key. The next hole for insertion of the key should now be visible.
Frequently Asked Questions
1. At what age is palatal expansion most effective?
Palatal expanders work best when the jaw is still growing, typically in children and early teens, because the palatal suture (growth center) is not yet fully fused. However, adults can sometimes benefit from alternative approaches.
2. Why might my child need a palatal expander?
Children may need a palatal expander if the upper jaw is too narrow, causing issues like crossbite, crowding, impacted teeth, or breathing problems. Early expansion can improve facial development and make room for permanent teeth.
3. How long does treatment with a palatal expander take?
The active expansion phase usually lasts a few weeks to a couple of months, depending on how much widening is needed. After the desired expansion is achieved, the expander may stay in place for additional time to allow the bone to stabilize.
4. How do I clean around a palatal expander?
Keep the expander clean by brushing thoroughly around all surfaces and using a water flosser or interdental brush to reach food particles. Good oral hygiene prevents plaque buildup under and around the appliance.
5. What happens after the palatal expander is removed?
Once the expansion phase is complete and the bone has stabilized, retainers or braces may be used to continue aligning teeth and maintaining the new arch shape.
